History of Allerton Castle
Allerton Castle is steeped in history – you can’t help but feel its grandeur when you visit this iconic stately home. Records of the site date back to 1066. A previous house was built in the sixteenth century, with an adjoining Catholic chapel built in 1809. By this time Allerton Castle was renowned as an ‘elegant new built mansion’. The present Gothic-style house was built between 1848 and 1854 by Lord Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton – its unique style is an unmistakable feature of the North Yorkshire countryside.
By the 1980s essential structural repair was carried out by Dr Rolph, who in 2016 gifted Allerton Castle, its contents, grounds and estate to the UK charity the Gerald Arthur Rolph Foundation for Historic Preservation and Education. Now the foundation works to preserve and restore this Victorian-era stately home.

At Allerton Castle in North Yorkshire, you can celebrate one of the most important days in your life in a unique, historic Grade I listed wedding venue. You’ll have exclusive use of the castle and 25 acres of grounds and gardens which ooze magic, grandeur and tradition. Bridal preparations and pre-ceremony celebrations take place in the Palace Bridal Suite, while the groom relaxes in the Billiard Room.
The wedding ceremony itself will take place in the Great Hall, with its magnificent balconies and the grand staircase – the most memorable way for the bride to make her appearance. After you’ve tied the knot, your Wedding Breakfast will be served in the stunning, vaulted ballroom which can cater for up to 120 guests. While you’re enjoying this dream breakfast, the Great Hall will be cleared for the evening’s celebration and parties.
To round off your special day, you can choose to stay in the Bridal Suite and wake up as husband and wife to the delights Allerton Castle has to offer.

Allerton Castle offers fantastic inclusive packages for everything you need – including exclusive hire of the castle, all the essential items for the celebration, and a personal wedding coordinator and planner. They also partner with Bradshaws of York to offer fine dining options for you and your guests. This basic package includes reception drinks, canapes, wine during the meal, an evening buffet and a three-course Wedding Breakfast.
