My Favourite Wedding Venues in North Yorkshire for Photography

After a decade of capturing wedding stories across Yorkshire, I’ve developed quite the soft spot for certain venues that consistently create magic through my lens!

As someone who grew up watching my father direct actors in film studios, I’ve always been drawn to locations that tell a story of their own. North Yorkshire, with its dramatic landscapes, historic architecture, and romantic settings, offers some of the most photogenic wedding venues I’ve had the pleasure of working in.

Today, I’m sharing my favourite North Yorkshire wedding venues that consistently deliver breathtaking photography opportunities. These are places where my 25 years of photography experience (yes, I started with film photography – bit of a photo geek, I know!) finds endless inspiration, and where your special day can be documented in truly timeless images while you’re busy having fun.

Middleton Lodge Estate

Nestled in the heart of North Yorkshire countryside, Middleton Lodge Estate offers a photographer’s dream with its Georgian architecture and 200 acres of private grounds.

  • The Main House – With its elegant symmetry and grand staircase, the Georgian mansion creates stunning backdrops for formal portraits
  • The Fig House – Flooded with natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows, this space creates ethereal, romantic images
  • The Walled Garden – Seasonal blooms and meandering paths offer endless opportunities for intimate couple portraits

What I love most about Middleton Lodge is how the light changes throughout the day, from the soft morning glow filtering through the woodland to the golden evening light that bathes the stone buildings. The variety of settings within one venue means we can create a diverse story of your day without ever feeling rushed between locations. The way the main house sits proudly against the Yorkshire sky often reminds me of those classic film compositions I grew up admiring.

Goldsborough Hall

This 17th-century stately home combines royal heritage with intimate luxury, creating a majestic setting for wedding photography that still feels personal and warm.

  • The Regal Staterooms – With ornate ceilings and period features that speak to the hall’s royal connections
  • The Japanese Garden – Offering year-round visual interest with its structural planting and tranquil atmosphere
  • The Quarter-Mile Lime Tree Walk – Creating a natural cathedral of branches that frames couples beautifully in any season

Having photographed at Goldsborough throughout the changing seasons, I’ve found that each visit offers something new. The gardens, designed with distinct ‘rooms’, allow me to create a narrative through your photographs that feels like turning the pages of a storybook. The emotional resonance of this historic space adds depth to images that simply can’t be manufactured – it’s about capturing how these grand surroundings make you feel on your special day.

The Tithe Barn at Bolton Abbey

Set within the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey Estate, this restored 16th-century barn combines rustic charm with spectacular Dales views.

  • The Barn Interior – With its exposed beams and stone walls creating a warm, textural backdrop that photographs beautifully in any light
  • The Abbey Ruins – Offering dramatic architectural frames just a short walk from the main venue
  • The River Wharfe – Providing reflective surfaces and natural soundscapes that add sensory dimensions to your photographs

What makes the Tithe Barn particularly special for photography is the juxtaposition of refined elegance within the rustic structure. The way light streams through the high windows creates natural spotlights throughout the day, perfect for capturing those spontaneous moments of laughter and emotion that tell the authentic story of your celebration. The surrounding landscape offers breathtaking backdrops that change dramatically with the Yorkshire seasons.

Newby Hall

This magnificent 17th-century house near Ripon offers some of North Yorkshire’s most spectacular gardens, creating endless possibilities for romantic wedding photography.

  • The Double Herbaceous Borders – Among the longest in Europe, offering a riot of colour from late spring through autumn
  • The White Garden – Creating ethereal, dreamy backdrops perfect for romantic portraits
  • The River Ure – Providing reflective surfaces and dappled light through riverside trees

Having spent 25 years developing my eye for composition, I find Newby Hall offers that perfect balance of structured formal gardens and natural landscape elements. The changing light across the gardens throughout the day creates opportunities for diverse imagery within your wedding collection. From intimate moments captured in secluded garden corners to grand, sweeping vistas that showcase the Yorkshire landscape, Newby Hall offers visual storytelling opportunities that align perfectly with my narrative approach to wedding photography.

Ripley Castle

This historic castle and its grounds combine medieval architecture with picturesque lakeside settings, offering dramatic backdrops for truly memorable wedding photography.

  • The Walled Garden – With its traditional layout and seasonal planting providing year-round interest
  • The Lakeside – Offering reflective surfaces and open skies perfect for capturing the changing Yorkshire light
  • The Castle Exterior – Providing dramatic architectural elements that create a sense of timeless romance

What I particularly love about photographing at Ripley Castle is how the venue seems to change personality with the weather. On bright days, the stone glows warm and welcoming; during Yorkshire’s more dramatic weather, the castle takes on a moody, romantic atmosphere that creates incredibly emotional images. Having photographed numerous weddings here over the years, I’ve developed an intimate knowledge of how the light moves across the grounds throughout the day and seasons – knowledge that helps me anticipate and capture those perfect moments while you’re focused on celebrating.
